Ox Eye Sunflower or False Sunflower is a hardy, long-blooming perennial in the Aster family. It features bright yellow, daisy-like flowers with golden centers that resemble true sunflowers. Unlike annual sunflowers, Ox Eye Sunflower is a clump-forming perennial that blooms profusely from early summer to fall, making it a reliable source of nectar and pollen for pollinators.

Growth Habits & Characteristics:

•Height: 3–5 feet

•Spread: 2–3 feet

•Sun Requirements: Full sun to partial shade

•Soil Preferences: Prefers well-drained, medium to dry soils; adaptable to various conditions

•Lifespan: Perennial

•Bloom Time: Early summer to fall

•Water Needs: Low to moderate; drought-tolerant once established

Host Insect:

Serves as a host plant for several Checkerspot butterflies and is relied upon by many oligolectic bees (bees that rely on very specific plants as sources for nectar & pollen)

Pollinator Importance:

•Supports native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators by providing abundant nectar and pollen.

•Attracts predatory insects like soldier beetles and parasitic wasps, which help control garden pests.

Companion Plants:

•Echinacea purpurea (Purple Coneflower) – Complements Heliopsis with its striking purple blooms.

•Rudbeckia hirta (Black-Eyed Susan) – Enhances prairie-style plantings with more yellow flowers.

•Schizachyrium scoparium (Little Bluestem) – Adds texture and movement to the landscape.

•Liatris spicata (Dense Blazing Star) – Attracts pollinators and provides vertical contrast.

•Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed) – Supports butterflies and other beneficial insects.

Ecological Importance:

•Pollinator Magnet: Provides a long-lasting nectar and pollen source for bees, butterflies, and beetles.

•Bird Food Source: Produces seeds that attract songbirds in late summer and fall.

•Drought and Heat Tolerant: Thrives in dry conditions, making it ideal for prairie and meadow plantings.

•Wildlife Habitat: Supports diverse insect populations, which in turn benefit birds and other wildlife.
