Purple Prairie Clover is a perennial legume native to central North American prairies. It features vibrant purple, cone-shaped flower heads atop slender, wiry stems, blooming from early to mid-summer. The plant’s fine-textured, fern-like foliage adds delicate beauty to its surroundings. Purple Prairie Clover plays a significant role in prairie ecosystems by enriching the soil through nitrogen fixation.  

Growth Habits & Characteristics:

•Height: 1–3 feet 

•Spread: 1–2 feet 

•Sun Requirements: Full sun 

•Soil Preferences: Adaptable to various soil types, including clay, loam, and sand; prefers well-drained soils

•Lifespan: Perennial

•Bloom Time: Early to mid-summer

•Water Needs: Low to moderate; exhibits drought tolerance once established 

Host Insects:

Serves as a larval host plant for the Dogface Sulphur and Reakirt’s Blue butterflies.

Pollinator Importance:

•Pollinators: Attracts a variety of native bees and specialist pollinators, as well as butterflies and other beneficial insects. 

Companion Plants:

•Schizachyrium scoparium (Little Bluestem): Provides structural contrast and supports wildlife.

•Echinacea purpurea (Purple Coneflower): Complements with its purple blooms and attracts pollinators.

•Rudbeckia hirta (Black-Eyed Susan): Adds bright yellow flowers, enhancing visual appeal and supporting pollinators.

•Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed): Offers additional nectar sources for butterflies and other pollinators.

•Coreopsis lanceolata (Lanceleaf Coreopsis): Provides early-season blooms and attracts beneficial insects.

•Soil Enrichment: As a legume, Purple Prairie Clover fixes atmospheric nitrogen, enhancing soil fertility and benefiting neighboring plants.

•Wildlife Habitat: Provides forage for wildlife; its seeds are consumed by various bird species.

•Pollinator Support: Offers a rich nectar source during its blooming period, supporting a diverse array of pollinators.
